The Zapata peninsula has 11 scuba diving sites and 4 International Scuba Diving Centers. Examples of sites are El Caletón, Playa Larga and Playa Girón, as well as Cueva de los Peces, all near the Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs). The varied underwater flora and fauna, the well conserved ocean bottom with wrecks, the pleasant temperatures and the excellent visibility make this area one of the 10 major dive sites in Cuba. All these features are complemented by the 70km cave system in the area, the largest in Cuba, which is characterized by the existence of several flooded caves allowing to explore those underwater formations. It is also possible to go deep into the underwater caves belonging to the speleological lake system of Montemar, which reach in some points depths of 70meters.

It is also possible to go deep into the underwater caves belonging to the speleological lake system of Montemar, which reach in some points depths of 70meters.
In El Caletón you can find the Octopus Diving Center, run by Francis. Both he and his assistants have extensive experience, with whom you can enjoy the magnificent under water world at any level. If you are a beginner you can take a beginners course. However you already have qualifications you should know that in Playa Larga, about 6 km from El Caletón, there is the Cueva de los Peces, a multilevel diving site, with about 80 meters from the shore a large wall. Diving here is immensely attractive because of the steepness of the ocean wall, which is extremely close to the shore and covered by astonishing coral beds, including black ones, as well as sea fans and sponges. The first thing you´ll feel will be a sensation of vertigo. But don't worry, you're in the water and you won’t fall.
I would like to emphasize that diving here is different compared to diving at any other site because here in one dive you will be able to enjoy the diversity of fish and corals in addition to the open sea once you reach the wall. Moreover, due to the proximity of the walls diving is done from shore without boats. It is also possible to enter the underwater caves belonging to the cave system Montemar, which in some places reaches a depth of 70metros.
Francis and his colleagues go diving every day of the week, starting from nine in the morning: Just go to the dive center or to the Cueva de los Peces and you can dive (or if you prefer, you can rent snorkel equipment for a few hours underwater). The price is about 25 CUC per dive. A snorkel equipment costs about 5 CUC for the day.
